About the Book

Pledged CoverGenre: M/M/F Erotic Suspense

“What exactly do you deduce we proposed?”
“That I enter into a sexual relationship with a married couple.”

Avery Collins is an ambitious young journalist in early-1900s Charleston, South Carolina, when exotic newcomers Timothy and Vonnie Duke spot him at a fancy gala on the Battery. The Dukes like bringing pretty playthings to their marriage bed, and with a promotion in mind, Avery entertains their advances not knowing lust can quickly turn to love — and love to murder.

Vividly atmospheric and told from three points of view, this novella proves sexual prowess can get a man far in life in exchange for his soul.

My Review

Wolf Among Sheep by Sara Dobie Bauer
My rating:

In Wolf Among Sheep, journalist Avery is hunting for a story when he ends up in the clutches of a promiscuous married couple, the Dukes. Avery senses danger in their touch—especially in the husband’s. But ambition drives him to give up his body in hopes of getting the details he needs to get a promotion at the newspaper.

I went into this expecting a love story, which I suppose it is. I so often read romance novels, though, so my default expectation is for a happy ending. This story is different.

The promise of erotic scenes piqued my interest, but the plot—regardless of its beautifully described sex scenes—had me speeding through the story’s second half. The characters were vividly drawn with nuanced motivations, and every scene was rife with conflict. The author excels at painting a picture; the early-1900s backdrop cradled the story in an easy, unobtrusive manner.

The only thing that kept me from giving this five stars were the alternating viewpoints. There are three of them, and they are all in first-person and unlabeled, so I found myself struggling to figure out who was speaking for the first few sentences of most passages. However, it didn’t hinder my enjoyment of the story too much.

I’d recommend this novella to fans of suspenseful, sensuous literary reads. It reminds me of the short novel Beasts by Joyce Carol Oates, though I confess I enjoyed this one a bit more.
